James Bonadies: Why You Should Wait to Niche Down
If you’ve read some of our posts, you’ll know by now how much we advocate for James Bonadies’ Local Marketing Vault course on how to grow your own business online. His ridiculously simple approach to marketing is the exact reason why he and his partner, Jason, have grown a $30M company in just a few years.
James Bonadies and Jason McKim teach their 6,000+ students how to keep profit margins high while keeping everything else low and as straightforward as possible.
The coolest part about James Bonadies’ business model is that it…
- doesn’t take a lot of time to learn,
- is not expensive to get up and running, and
- is not complicated — meaning you don’t need to be that “technical” to thrive at it!
Let’s explain a little more…
What James Bonadies’ Local Marketing Vault course teaches you is how to act as a bridge to local businesses — meaning you help them make more money by getting more customers.
Makes sense, right?
Why did James Bonadies choose to focus his business on helping local businesses?
Because he believes it’s the best business model.
Why?
Because the barrier to entry is so low — which means there are ton of people doing it, but not a lot that are doing it well. This makes a lot of business owners skeptical of marketers, because so many of them will promise the world and then not deliver.
THIS IS A GOOD THING!
It means that there’s huge opportunity to be good at it because it’s not that difficult to get someone results with digital advertising.
James Bonadies — Stop trying to “niche down.”
The biggest thing that marketers struggle with is picking their niche.
What James Bonadies advises his students to do is to use the triangle method.
Why should you never niche down, especially in the beginning? Because you don’t know what type of business owner you’re going to love working with.
Should I get into helping HVAC companies?
What about lawyers?
Dentists? Electricians?
Photographers? Podiatrists? Financial advisors?
Try them all!
Seriously, any work that comes your way, try to work with them and see what happens. See what results you can get them with the skills you have. See what that type of business owner is like to work with.
Maybe you’ll get annoyed at how little your lawyer client picks up their phone.
Maybe you’ll really love helping relieve people of their foot pain by connecting them to a podiatrist.
Or maybe you’ll find that electricians are your favourite type of client because they always seem to know a bunch of other business owners that they refer you to!
You don’t know until you try — which will then bring you to the second phase of the triangle, where you now get to niche down a little. Start cutting out the types of businesses you don’t love working with, and keep developing your skills with the others.
Before you even realize it, you’ll become an expert at a few niches. Now, you can go to town targeting those people because you’ll have the knowledge and results to back it up.
“I help roofers get more clients by using these specific strategies that have gotten these results.”
It’s okay to be a generalist in the beginning.
Remember, spread yourself thin in the beginning to develop those skills. Once you find the niches that you enjoy working with and become an expert in those fields, you can start charging $7,500 – $10,000 monthly — because you’ll have what those business owners are looking for:
- The knowledge and strategies they need to get it right, with the
- results to back it up, resulting in
- more profit for them
