In this course, we’re going to go over our resources, tips, and tricks for doing what we do—and we’re going to organize that information in the format of common problems people have with making social content.

The segments will be structured like this:

Phase 1: Content Knowledge / Planning

Example: I don’t know how to make good content

Phase 2: Translating Ideas into Content

Ex: My ideas are good, but my social posts suck…

Phase 3: Filming the Content

Ex: I don’t have much filming equipment or experience

Phase 4: Editing

Ex: Editing takes too long and costs money!

Phase 5: Posting

Ex: When and where and how do I remember to post?!

Phase 6: Using Analytics Properly

Ex: I don’t know why my content isn’t going viral.

Phase 7: Getting Buyers from Social

Ex: I get likes but I don’t get sales…

If any of these examples resonate with you (and even if they don’t — let’s face it: you’re on this page for a reason) then we’re happy to help you see your solutions!

Phase 1: Content Knowledge & Planning Problems

Let’s get one thing clear up front: if you can jump over your planning hurdles—you can jump over ANY of the other hurdles we’ll dive into in this series.

The biggest setback people face in any new venture is not getting started. Do not allow yourself to feel so unsure of what your content will turn out like that you just don’t make any at all.

So, pause right now and tell yourself one thing:

“I will make social media content — and it might suck… but I’m going to do it anyway.”

Great! Now that you’ve made that commitment to yourself, let’s continue with the problems that get in people’s way.

1) I don’t know what “good” content looks like

Unless you’re just emerging on to the social media landscape for the first time ever (welcome out from under your rock!), we’re going to bet that you actually do know the answer to this.

Good content does two things:

  1. It (the thumbnail) makes people click on it.

AND

  1. It (the post) makes them stay (and by stay, we mean watch, like, share, save, etc.).
Guys, THAT IS IT! This is ALL your content needs to do to perform well.

Do a little exercise to reaffirm this:

Open your Instagram Explore page, and take a look at the posts that pop up.

It might not seem like they have a lot in common, but look at each one and ask yourself:

Does this post…

Educate

Inspire

Entertain

We promise you, if it’s getting a lot of traction, it probably does all three!

That, my friends, is good content.

Keep this in mind when you’re writing down ideas for your business content. The easiest one to go for here will likely be education, because you’re probably trying to educate people on what you do and what you could do for them!

But be mindful that this is where most business owners go wrong!

Your viewers need to understand what’s in in for them. Why should they care about your [insert business focus here]? What’s the benefit for them?

Simply talking about the great features of your product/service won’t do it — you need to demonstrate how it’s going to improve their lives!

Now, if you throw in a little humor AND a dash of inspiration—you’ll probably have a hit!

Now, a note on the thumbnail portion: remember

the whole point of a thumbnail image is to get people to click on the video.

Therefore, if your thumbnail doesn’t entice them in some way, there’s no point in you taking the time to create one.

What you’ll often see is people taking a screenshot from one frame of the video and adding a text caption explaining the intent of it. We’ll often suggest using a different image—in the case that there’s no screenshot that makes a strong standalone image—that reiterates the caption.

Make sure you use this text to get demonstrate the point of the post.

Ex: your business just hit its first million dollar milestone, and you want people to know so they take you seriously.

You put a video together with shots of your journey like interviews, client wins, travel shots, close-ups of your screen, etc.

You create a thumbnail with an image of you smiling and popping a bottle of champagne, with a caption like

5 actions I took to hit $1M

The point here is that you’re using the thumbnail to entice someone to click on the post, and then delivering on that value. Most people won’t care about a post of you just shaking around a bottle of champagne—people will get bored of that really quick, unless you wipe out and it’s hilarious—so, your post needs to follow through. Use the caption here to elaborate on those five steps.

Make the thumbnail a tease, but not just a tease. Dangle the carrot, and then feed it to them!

Example: Watch this video from Kenz Lawren on TikTok.

If Kenz was simply looking into the camera while telling this story, most people would get bored and scroll on. But because she’s added an element of entertainment (showing you what a model “really” looks like), more people want to see the video through. Thousands of people actually watched the entire thing and felt inspired enough to share it.

BOOM!

Key takeaway: good content uses education, inspiration, and entertainment to get people to click AND engage!
